Summer Break
Finally — out of the city and on my way to one of my absolute favourite places on earth: Jotunheimen National Park.
I was here a few years ago, and the scenery completely stole my breath. The glaciers, the lakes, and the occasional cosy hut where you can enjoy a glass of wine (I’m only human!) add up to the perfect setting for a few days away.
Last time, I tackled the western part of the park and Besseggen, so I’m skipping it this trip. It was pure magic back then, and I honestly don’t think it could be topped. Better to leave that 4 a.m. Besseggen hike exactly as it lives in my memory.
So what’s the plan this time? Truthfully, I’m not 100% sure yet. I’ve got about four and a half days to roam one of Norway’s greatest national parks, and I’m happy to just play it by ear. One thing is certain: I’ll be summiting Galdhøpiggen, Norway’s highest peak (2,469 m), and its slightly shorter sister, Glittertind (2,465 m).
Here’s the very loose itinerary so far:
Day 1: Gjendesheim → Glitterheim
Day 2: Summit Glittertind from Glitterheim, then continue down to Spiterstulen.
Day 3: Summit Galdhøpiggen from Spiterstulen.
From here, the plan fades into “play it by ear” territory — which is exactly how I like it.
Day 4: Wide open. Anything goes.
Day 5: Reach Gjendebu early to catch the ferry back to Gjendesheim (only two boats a day).
I’ll be mixing nights in DNT huts with nights in my tent, depending on conditions and where I end up.
And some gear news! I finally treated myself to a hiker-friendly camera that doesn’t weigh a ton: the Ricoh GRIII. I also upgraded my pack to the newer version with a beautiful water-repellent lining. And I got new hiking socks… but that’s probably oversharing.
Today’s task: finish packing and secure the single most important part of any trip — the right snacks.
Bye for now.
